RBI issues new framework for resolution of bad loans

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today issued a new framework for resolution of stressed assets or bad loans.

Banks recovered close to Rs 55,000 crore from the NCLT resolution, the official said, adding "Compared to Rs 74,562 crore in 2017-18, the recovery in the previous financial year nearly doubled to Rs 1.2 lakh crore."

Under the pact, which is part of project 'Sashakt', each resolution plan will be submitted by the lead lender to an Overseeing Committee. As many as 28 stressed loan accounts may be sold to asset reconstruction companies (ARCs) by banks in the absence of suitable bidders. These accounts were asked to resolve or send to bankruptcy courts for launch of insolvency proceedings by the central bank.

RBI said, "The Internal Advisory Committee (IAC) recommended for IBC reference all accounts with fund and non-fund based outstanding amount greater than Rs 5000 crore, with 60% or more classified as non-performing by banks as of March 31, 2016. The IAC noted that under the recommended criterion, 12 accounts totaling about 25% of the current gross NPAs of the banking system would qualify for immediate reference under IBC."
