The GST Council, chaired by Union Finance Minister Piyush Goyal, last week pruned the highest 28 per cent tax slab by moving some white goods to the 18 per cent tax bracket. It was decided that the new tax rates would come into effect from July 27.

The government said, "Sanitary napkins are classifiable under heading 9619. In pre-GST, they attractedconcessional excise duty of 6% and 5% VAT and, the pre-GST estimated total tax incidence on sanitary napkins was 13.68%.  Therefore, 12% GST rate had been provided for sanitary napkin."

Why do we need technology or hospitals or airplanes or anything modernised when we have traditional alternatives for everything? The primary factor here is that if a sanitary napkin was invented for menstruation, it cannot be classified as a privilege of some women, leaving behind the majority because they have been using and have the option to use conservative substitutes.
