4 terrorists killed in Shopian encounter

Four terrorists were killed in an operation by security forces in South Kashmir’s Shopian on June 23 morning. A police spokesman said that on a credible input about militants, a cordon and search operation was launched at Panzar area in Shopian by the security forces.

Hoshiarpur farmer sets a shining example of apple cultivation in Punjab

Traditionally limited to states like Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh, apple cultivation has now picked up pace in Punjab. Gurinder Singh Bajwa, a farmer from Ludhiana, is producing apples on a large scale in his farm in Chahal village in Hoshiarpur. Gurinder Singh Bajwa, farmer-turned-horticulturist, is producing apples of Anna variety, Dorsette golden variety, and pink lady, on 2 acres land at his farm in Chahal. Following in his footsteps, Colonel (Retd) RP Singh has also started cultivating apples here. Speaking to ANI, he told, "I used to work for a private firm in Srinagar and spray chemicals at apples. I thought of growing apples in Punjab but they were of high-chilling varieties. A few years ago I got to know that the Himachal Pradesh government has introduced low chilling varieties, which I later grew here."

Handicraft center provides training to girls in Rajouri

Under the handicraft center in J&K’s Rajouri, several women’s and girls’ are getting empowerment through training facility. Handicraft center is providing training to girls belonging to Below Poverty Line (BPL) category and school dropouts. Coming from far flung areas, the girls are trained to craft various decorative designs on clothes at this centre. After getting training of handicraft, these women’s and girls’ can start their own business and can also earn their daily livelihood. The government of India has also provided loans for starting their business in this regard.

Three get life imprisonment, 5-year jail term for others in Kathua case

Three of the six convicted in the rape-and-murder case of an eight-year-old nomadic girl in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua were awarded life imprisonment by a special court in Pathankot today. The remaining three accused were sentenced to five years imprisonment. The seventh accused, Vishal, was acquitted by the court.

The event was organised to boost the music talent of young Kashmiri artists and to prove their mettle in terms of music, singing. The talent hunt saw huge participation of youth across the Valley who showcased their talent in the event.

Strawberries make early entry in market due to favourable climate in Srinagar

It comes as a relief to potters of Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur as their income increases at this time of the year. The profession of the potter comes with a lot of challenges as they do not have any sale in winter season. They are also forced to buy raw material at very high prices. They want government to support their art and provide assistance for cheaper raw material. Traditional earthen pot or ‘matka’ is known for its cooling quality and health benefits.

Bandipora-Gurez road opens for traffic after 5 months

85-km-long Bandipora-Gurez road in Jammu and Kashmir was opened for vehicular traffic on Monday after 5 months. The stretch was closed owing to intense snowfall in the region. Gurez road was cut off after the road closed. Ceremony was held at Razdan pass, 11,500 feet above sea level. With consistent efforts by Indian Army and Border Road Organisation (BRO), the road was cleared in due time.
