Last year, car sales in Delhi were more than Bangalore and Mumbai combined
It seems as though love for cars in national capital region (NCR) is unmatched in whole of India. Car sales in the national capital is more than the second and third cities combined.
According to Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), last year, car sales in Delhi were a total of 2,95,717 cars, or over 10% of the total cars sold in the country.
Interestingly, cars sales in Delhi were more than the next two, i.e. Bangalore and Mumbai combined. The cumulative car sales of Mumbai and Bangalore add up to 2,60,189 cars which is still less than Delhi.
The data showed that people in Bangalore bought 1,34,289 cars whereas Mumbai stood third with 4.8% marketshare, at 1,25,900 cars sold between April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2016.
Carmakers sold nearly 28 lakh passenger vehicles in India in 2015-16, nearly 1.9 lakh more than the previous year.
As per the data published by Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), July 2016 saw domestic passenger car sales increase by 9.62% as compared to the same month in the previous year.
Delhi held 11.4% of the market share as compared to Bangalore which closed in on 5.1% and Mumbai which was at 4.8%.
The Delhi- NCR (National Capital Region) split analysis showed that the second highest percentage of cars sold after Delhi, came from Gurgaon.
In Delhi the sale of Lower Hatch cars like Alto, Celerio, i10, Wagon-R as well as Upper Hatch car like Avventura, Baleno, Grand i10 and Vista are doing really well as compared to other cities.
However, the sale of Upper Sedan cars like Cammy, Corolla, Cruze, Octavia among others have decreased over their previous year’s numbers. Even in Delhi, their sale had reached 4053 cars, which is still the highest among other cities.
North India still contributed to the highest cars sales at 35.04%.
