Professional tax is a tax that is charged by the state's commercial tax department on people who earn a salary in that state. Employers are responsible for deducting this tax from employees' salaries before paying them. Since this tax is set by each state, the rules, rates, and deadlines vary from state to state. Different income groups are required to pay different amounts of professional tax. People living in Union Territories do not have to pay this tax.
