The Indian Railways will undertake one more drive of “MASSIVE SHRAMDAN“ with main focus on collection of plastic waste on Tuesday, the 17th September 2019. Indian Railways in the recent past also had undertaken such drives to enhance cleanliness through a collection of plastic waste from all railway premises and replacing plastics with alternatives.
The Environment and Housekeeping Management Division of Railways through a letter dated October 12, 2019, advised the national transporter to distribute cloth bags in large numbers as a preparation for the ban of single-use plastic with effect from October 2. Single-use plastic means usage of any plastic below 50 microns, in any manner.
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi had specially said that Indian Railways should lead this initiative and accordingly the Minister for Railways Piyush Goyal had directed a 10 days cleanliness drive earlier for trains and stations starting September 2. Goyal has been monitoring several such drives.
