As traffic on Indian roads is increasing day by day, the government is striving hard not only by creating awareness about rules to follow among people but also taking help of technology to check mishaps. This was reflected in a recently concluded 'Global NCAP Stop the Crash' event, where Joint Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Abhay Damle, talked about the effectiveness of speed warning systems in Indian cars.

Addressing the event, Damle said that from July 1, 2019 onwards, all new cars that go on sale in India will need to come fitted with a speed warning system as standard. He said that speed warning system is necessary for India, mainly because of the fact that it can become irritating.

Damle said that the country will have safety braking features such as electronic stability control and autonomous braking as mandatory feature on passenger cars by as soon as 2022 or 2023.

The “Stop The Crash” event was organised by Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) at Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida. The Global NCAP has partnered with other firms like Bosch, Continental, ZF along with others who are engage in manufacturing braking systems and other ancillaries.

The campaign also staged demonstration of crash avoidance technologies such as ABS for two-wheelers, ESC besides autonomous braking.

Notably, the speed warning system prompts the driver to maintain a safe driving speed and keep the vehicle within highway speed limits. The driver is alerted with 2 beeps every 60 seconds if he exceeds 80 kmph by the designed system, said an NDTV auto report.
