Monsoon in Gujarat: The rainy season is likely to hit Gujarat in the third week of June, i.e. almost seven weeks from now, officials said at a meeting to review preparedness of the state’s administration for any disasters during the rainy season. Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Ahmedabad’s director Jayanta Sarkar said that monsoon would possibly hit the Gujarat coast in the third week of next month, i.e. more or less the regular time. He also spoke about the El Nino and Indian Ocean Dipole scenario for the upcoming monsoon. Chief secretary JN Singh, who chaired the meeting, said that the state’s administration was prepared to meet any contingencies that may come up during the upcoming monsoon season.
Addressing the meeting, which was also attended by senior state government officials, representatives of the three Armed Forces, officials of Indian Meteorological Department, different central agencies, among others, Singh stressed on the need to be fully prepared for any emergencies, saying it would enable the administration respond quickly to the situation, and help in minimising damage.
He also directed all the departments to be ready with their disaster management plans, and called for close coordination between department departments and agencies during such times. Singh also announced that the control room would become operational in the state from May 15 onwards ahead of the monsoon. Officials said that flood control rooms would also be made operational at district level before the rainy season sets in.
