Mulayam Singh emerged as a socialist leader and went on to serve as the Chief Minister thrice of the country's most populous state -- 5 December 1989 – 24 June 1991.

Samajwadi Party founder and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh passed away on Monday morning. He was 82. Yadav was undergoing treatment at a Gurugram hospital since October 2. Yadav rose in Uttar Pradesh's politics when the OBC movement was gaining strength.

He emerged as a socialist leader and went on to serve as the Chief Minister thrice of the country's most populous state -- 5 December 1989 – 24 June 1991; 5 December 1993 – 3 June 1995 and 29 August 2003 – 13 May 2007.

Yadav had also served as Defence Minister in HD Deve Gowda and IK Gujral governments.
