Ramadan 2024 Moon Sighting: The holy month of Ramadan, also known as Ramzan or Ramadhan, is around the corner. It is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is considered the most important period for Muslims worldwide.
After the moon of Ramadan was sighted in Saudi Arabia on the evening of March 10, Muslims there started fasting on Monday, March 11. With this, India will observe the first day of Ramzan a day later, i.e., on Tuesday, March 12.
Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam and during this holy month, Al-Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Mohammed (S.A.W.). The word ‘Ramadan’ originates from the Arabic word ‘Ramad/Ramida,’ meaning scorching heat or drought, symbolising abstinence from eating and drinking anything from dawn till dusk.
During the month of Ramadan, Muslims observe a strict fast called Rozah from sunrise to sunset each day. Roza has two parts: one is Sehri, and the other is Iftaar.
Every day, devotees wake up early in the morning to have their first meal called sehri. After the day is over, in the evening, they break their fast by eating dates and drinking water, followed by the evening meal called iftar.
