Indira Gandhi Urban Employment Guarantee Scheme: The Indira Gandhi Urban Employment Guarantee Scheme, launched by Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, has provided jobs to one lakh people within six days of its launch. According to an official, there is a lot of enthusiasm among the people living in urban areas about the scheme. "The number of beneficiaries is continuously increasing," the official was quoted as saying by the news agency PTI. According to the report, more than 2.45 lakh families have got their job cards made under the scheme.
When was Indira Gandhi Urban Employment Guarantee Scheme launched?
Indira Gandhi Urban Employment Guarantee Scheme touted as the country's biggest scheme to give guaranteed jobs to the people residing in cities by the Congress, was launched on September 9 by Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot. The government is promising 100 days of jobs to the people in a year.
Who is eligible for jobs?
According to the state government, the age limit to get a job under Indira Gandhi Urban Employment Guarantee Scheme is 18 to 60 years. Only those who are living within the limits of urban local bodies are eligible to get employment. This is more or less like the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS) of the Centre government. The only difference is that MNREGS was for the rural population and the Indira Gandhi Urban Employment Guarantee Scheme is for the urban population.
The government is giving priority to the poor and destitute people and those who lost jobs during the pandemic. According to the government, at least 50 people in each ward of urban local bodies will be employed.
Remuneration
Those who will get jobs under this scheme will be paid under three categories - Rs 259 per day for unskilled labourers, Rs 283 per day for skilled ones and Rs 271 per day for supervisors.
Types of tasks
There are different types of tasks that have been divided into different categories. Some of them are:
Environment protection: It involves tasks like plantation of trees in public places, maintenance of parks and water plants on footpaths and dividers.
Water conservation: It includes tasks like cleanliness and improvement of ponds, lakes and stepwells, rain water harvesting and restoration of water sources.
Heritage conservation, convergence, removal of encroachments and illegal boards, hoarding and banners are some related works.
