The government has hinted that they won't be increasing the deadline for filing income tax this year and urged people to file their returns by today to avoid the late fee. Income Tax Department informed that apart from late fee, missing deadlines have several other implications too.

Income Tax Return filing deadline today: The deadline for filing of Income tax return for the Financial Year 2021-22 and Assessment Year 2022-23 is about to end today. Taxpayers who haven't filled their ITR yet are requested to do so as soon as possible as only few hours left. The government has not announced extension of date for ITR filing so far on Sunday. 

The government has hinted that they won't be increasing the deadline for filing income tax this year and urged people to file their returns by today to avoid the late fee. Income Tax Department informed that apart from late fee, missing deadlines have several other implications too. If taxpayers miss the deadline then they will be required to pay interest on the late payment of taxes.

As per the Income-tax department, "ITR also allows carry-forward of loss and claim refund from income tax department. Different forms of returns of income are prescribed for filing of returns for different Status and Nature of income. These forms can be downloaded from https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal ."

According to the Income Tax Department's official website-
- Go to the Income Tax e-Filing portal, https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/
- Using your username, password, date of birth, and Captcha Code log in to your account.
- Click on the 'e-File' menu and click the 'Income Tax Return' link and tap on 'continue'.
- Read the Instructions carefully and Fill all the applicable and mandatory fields of the Online ITR Form.
- Once you select the appropriate verification option in the 'Taxes Paid and Verification' tab, Click on the 'Preview and Submit' button, Verify all the data entered in the ITR.
- 'Submit' the ITR.
- On Choosing 'I would like to e-Verify' option, e-Verification can be done through EVC, Aadhaar OTP, Prevalidated Bank, Account Prevalidated, Demat Account any by entering the EVC/OTP when asked for.
- The EVC/OTP should be entered within 60 seconds else, the Income Tax Return (ITR) will be auto-submitted. The submitted ITR should be verified later by using 'My Account > e-Verify Return' option or by sending signed ITR-V to CPC.

Those who have already filed their income tax return 2022 and have claimed return, they can track refund status by following certain steps. These are refunds allowed by the Income Tax department for any excess tax paid by them to the government.
Step 1. visit www.incometax.gov.in
Step 2: Log in to your account. For this, you will need to enter PAN/Aadhaar number as user ID and password
Step 3: Click on 'e-file' option
Step 4: Select 'Income tax returns' under the 'e-file' option
Step 5: Select 'View Filed returns'
Step 6: Check the latest ITR filed
Step 7: Select option 'View Details' to see the status of ITR filed

The government had through Finance Act 2021 inserted a new Section 194P in the Income Tax Act, 1961 to define certain conditions to allow exempting senior citizens from filing Income Tax Returns. The new Section 194P came into effect on April 1, 2021, under which, super senior citizens can be exempted from ITR filing under certain circumtances like age should be 75 years or above, should be a resident in the previous year, has pension income and interest income only and more.
