Under the new policy, vehicles older than 10 years for diesel and 15 years for petrol will face a structured disposal process. Instead of immediate confiscation and scrapping, the government will implement substantial fines, encouraging owners to take their old vehicles off the road voluntarily.

According to a recent notification by the road transport and highways ministry, from April 1, all vehicles owned by central and state governments, including buses owned by transport corporations and public sector undertakings, that are older than 15 years will be de-registered and scrapped.

The idea of scrappage policy was first initiated by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during her Budget 2021 speech on February 1, 2021

According to the policy, the approval will pave way for mandatory disposal of commercial vehicles, like trucks, autos, buses and tempos among others, that are 20 years old from April 1, 2020, coinciding with the implementation of the BS-VI norms. It also says that better reward or incentives will be given to those who will go ahead to scrap their 20-year-old vehicle.&nbsp;
