Firefox rolls out encrypted DNS over HTTPS by default

In a major privacy boost, Firefox announced the rollout of encrypted DNS over HTTPS (DoH) by default for users based in the US. As the official blog explains, before DoH, browsers doing DNS (Domain Name System) lookups for websites had to do so without encryption, potentially allowing other devices to collect the data, block or change it. With DoH enabled by default in the US, users can change their encrypted DNS requests to Cloudflare or NextDNS. Users outside the US can enable DoH from the browser settings.
Tesla Solar Roof may soon be available outside US

Tesla's innovative Solar Roof installation will be available outside of the US by the end of this year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in a tweet. Musk announced that the company is looking forward to international expansion later this year. Tesla's Solar Roof consists of a durable glass roof tile that comes integrated with solar technology that can power a home with 100 per cent renewable energy.

Spotify is reportedly testing a new feature that would allow its users to easily publish their own podcasts on the audio streaming platform. App analyst Jane Manchun Wong uncovered the 'Create podcast' button in the Spotify app and shared a screenshot of the feature from her official Twitter account.
YouTube Originals free to watch starting next month

YouTube has announced that its original series, movies, and events all part of the YouTube Originals section will be free to watch starting September 24 this year. On the official support page, YouTube said that some original content will be available for viewing without a YouTube Premium subscription, albeit supported with ads and only select episodes may be available for streaming at any time. YouTube Premium members will still continue to enjoy perks including ad-free viewing, access to all available episodes in a series when they premiere, offline viewing support, and access to bonus content.

Google to build new private subsea cable between Portugal and South Africa

Google is reportedly building a new private subsea cable that will connect Portugal and South Africa. As TechCrunch reports, the new project, called Equiano, will be built by Alcatel Submarine networks and will be able to carry 20 times the capacity of the last cable built to serve in the region. The first phase is expected to be completed in 2021.

WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new feature that would allow its users to share their WhatsApp status with other apps such as Facebook, Instagram, Gmail or Google Photos. According to The Verge, WhatsApp is not linking your accounts on two services, but making use of the existing data-sharing APIs to simply transfer the posts between apps on-device.
Uber may soon allow you to mark ‘favourite’ drivers

Uber is reportedly testing a new feature that would allow you mark a driver as a favourite. The option, spotted by Jane Manchun Wong, is available on the app after a ride has ended. You can ‘Add as favourite’ a driver to have a ride with the same driver in the future. The purposed feature may help build confidence among riders and make them feel safe. It is unclear when the feature would be rolled out to the public.
