Special prayers were offered on the 1st death anniversary of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in Odisha’s Bhubaneshwar on August 16. Locals paid tribute to late Vajapayee. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the former prime minister of India and senior BJP leader. He served the nation for thrice times. He died on August 16 last year due to respiratory disease.

A developed low pressure system located over north Madhya Pradesh and south Uttar Pradesh on Saturday morning is gradually weakening. However related troughs continue to persist over north central India and northeastern India. The trough leads to instability and brings heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms over Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Odisha on Saturday. Malkangiri district administration in Odisha with the help of state police has initiated a 15-day long training program for surrendered Naxals and transgenders in an attempt to make them self-dependent. The Naxals and transgenders are undergoing the training program for building their physical strength and enhancing their skills. The district administration and police have organised this training program in Malkangiri under the Government's social security and disability department order for surrendered Naxals and transgenders with an aim of holistic development and rehabilitation. Speaking to ANI, a transgender named Durga said, "We used to clap the entire day by roaming here and there in trains and buses but now we decided to choose a different path. We went to our district collector and asked them to help us. Now, we came here for training. We are now getting training for security guards. Along with us, surrendered Naxals are also taking the training."

As incessant rains continued in Odisha, the National Highway 26 was blocked on Monday due to the flood-like situation in Kalahandi district. Due to thunderstorms, many trees and electric poles fell down on National Highway 26. Police along with the help of locals removed trees and debris from the streets. People of Kalahandi were suffering from heat wave recorded above 45 degree temperature from past one week.

A man from Bhubaneswar dreams to establish a museum of rare artifacts. Businessman by profession, Satyaketan Mohanty has been collecting these artifacts since past 23 years. He has already collected about 8000 rare antique objects. Some of his artifacts are claimed to be a million years old. Speaking to Mohanty said, “I have some coins that are at least 2,000 to 2,500 years old. I have coins of Tipu Sultan and Razia Sultan.”

Famed for his austere way of living, newly-elected MP from Balasore, Pratap Chandra Sarangi stole the show on Thursday at the swearing-in ceremony of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Council of Ministers, of which he was a part. The crowd cheered and gave Sarangi a standing ovation just before he was administered the oath as the Minister of State by President Ram Nath Kovind. Speaking to ANI, Sarangi said: "I am overwhelmed. We have not been assigned any ministries yet, but as soon as I get it, I will first try to understand it. Elections are over now and now we will work for the development of Odisha. We will make it corruption-free." Two-time elected Member of Legislative Assembly form Odisha, this BJP leader made his mark in the recently-concluded Lok Sabha elections by winning from the Balasore constituency with a margin of 12, 956 votes. Pitted against sitting Biju Janata Dal's MP Rabindra Kumar Jena in the constituency, Sarangi won the seat by getting a whopping 4 lakh votes. The 64-year-old leader was selected as the Member of the Odisha Legislative Assembly, first between 2009 to 2014 and then between 2009 to 2014 from Nilagiri assembly segment. Sarangi is an active member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and Vishva Hindu Parishad.

A care center for abandoned, rescued, stray animals and birds was damaged due to 'Cyclone Fani'. Now, the reconstruction of the care center is in full swing. Animal lovers across India supported the center. The founder of Animal Welfare Trust Ekamra Purabi Patra said, "During cyclone, we tried to evacuate them but couldn't find a place. We shifted them here but the roof collapsed. A cat died due to hypothermia and a dog is still missing. We have pasted posters of him. People supported us a lot and re-construction is going on. Animal lovers across India supported us. It was a nightmare. At one point, we thought they won't survive this."
