Price paid to most of the domestic producers of natural gas has been hiked to USD 3.36 per million British thermal unit (mmBtu) from October 1, from the current USD 3.06, according to Oil Ministry's Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell.

The price of CNG being supplied in Rewari is being increased by 95 paise per kg from Rs 50.67 per kg to Rs 51.62 per kg. Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) will continue to offer a discount of Rs 1.50 per kg in the selling prices of CNG (compressed natural gas) for filling between 12.30 am to 5.30 am at select outlets, the company said in a statement.

India imports half of its gas which costs more than double the domestic rate. The USD 3.06 per mmBtu rate would be for six months beginning April 1 and will be the highest since April-September 2016 when a similar price was paid to domestic producers. The increase in price will boost earnings of producers like Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) and Reliance Industries but will also lead to a rise in CNG price, which uses natural gas as input. It would also lead to higher cost of urea and power production.
