"It's incumbent upon the Chinese government to explain" why its leader "would or would not participate", news agency Reuters quoted Jon Finer, the US deputy national security adviser, as saying in New Delhi. Although the US was often called upon to explain the actions of the Chinese government, that was not its role, he said, adding that it was "unfortunate" if China was not committed to the success of the bloc.

G20 aides agree on Ukraine war phrasing as leaders begin summit

Delegates from the world's most powerful countries have reached a compromise on language to describe the war in Ukraine, news agency Reuters reported citing a source with knowledge of the discussions. 

"Today, as the president of G20, India calls upon the entire world to first convert this global trust deficit into one trust and one confidence," PM Modi said in his opening remarks at the Bharat Mandapam convention centre. "It is time for all of us to move together."

Do you know when the Group of Twenty come into being?

The Group of Twenty, or G20, was founded in 1999 following the financial crisis of 1997-98. It was then an informal forum for the finance ministers and central bank chiefs of the most important industrialised and developing economies to discuss issues related to the global economy and finance. Only Treasury chiefs met as part of the G20 grouping in the initial years. However, heads of all member nations decided later on to meet once a year for a leaders' summit after the global financial crisis of 2008.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi says India is ready to offer all possible assistance to Morocco, where a devastating earthquake late on Friday claimed the lives of hundreds of people.  

The death toll from the 6.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the central part of the North African country increased to 632, news agency IANS reported quoting state TV. Morocco's Interior Ministry said in a statement that the fatalities were reported from the provinces and municipalities of Al-Haouz, Marrakesh, Ouarzazate, Azilal, Chichaoua, and Taroudant.

When we can defeat Covid we can also achieve victory over this trust deficit crisis," the Prime Minister says.

G20 negotiators were unable to resolve disagreements over the wording of the summit declaration on the war in Ukraine on Friday, according to a 38-page draft seen by news agency Reuters, leaving any possible breakthrough to bloc leaders during the two-day meeting. The draft, circulated among members, left the "geopolitical situation" paragraph blank, while it had agreed on the 75 other paragraphs which included climate change, cryptocurrencies, and reforms in multilateral development banks.
