This latest step may curb fatalities in road accidents. According to the latest order by Transport Department of Tamil Nadu government, it is now mandatory to buy BIS certified helmets mandatory at the time of purchase of new two wheelers. According to an official statement, Transport Commissioner of Tamil Nadu has instructed that the supply of the helmet to every buyer at the time of purchase of a new vehicle by the manufacturer or dealer should be ensured by the RTOs and report of the same should be submitted to his office every month. The step has been taken to reduce the road accidents and fatalities among two wheeler riders.

Various governments from time to time initiate measures to reduce road accidents and fatalities related to them. But, still the accident report reveals that the fatalities rate is more among the two wheeler riders i.e. 33%.
According to the Central Motor Vehicle Act, rule 138 (4) (f) 1989, at the time of purchase of a two wheeler, the manufacturer of the two wheeler shall supply protective head gear, keeping in mind the specifications prescribed by BIS.
It is highly advisable that BIS certified helmet should be used by riders as by means of this road accidents fatalities can be reduced to a great extent.
