Google is making passkeys as the default option for personal Google Accounts. According to the tech major, passwords will remain part of our lives despite the fact that the industry-wide goal is to eventually make passkeys the new login standard.

"This implies that the next time users sign in to their accounts, they will start seeing prompts to create and use passkeys, making their future sign-ins simpler. Additionally, users will also see the 'Skip password when possible' option toggled on in their Google Account settings," Google said in a blog post on Tuesday.

<h2>What are passkeys?</h2>

Passkeys provide a more secure and simpler alternative to passwords. According to Google, passkeys are 40 per cent faster than passwords and they also rely on a form of cryptography, which enhances their security. With passkeys, a user can just unlock their device using a fingerprint, face scan or pin.

"But while they’re a big step forward, we know that new technologies take time to catch on — so passwords may be around for a little while," Google added. That is the reason why users will continue to have the option to use a password to sign in and can decide not to use passkeys by turning off “Skip password when possible”, the company said.

"One of the immediate advantages of passkeys is that they alleviate the need for people to remember all those numbers and special characters in passwords. Additionally, they are resistant to phishing," the company wrote.

As per the company, people have used passkeys on applications like Search, YouTube, and Maps. Additionally, eBay and Uber have recently implemented passkeys, providing users the choice to forego using passwords when signing in on their platforms, and WhatsApp compatibility will be introduced soon, the tech giant added.

The company said that it will keep users updated about other online accounts where one can begin using passkeys.

Google makes passkeys default option for personal Google Accounts

Luxury housing projects continue to enjoy a significant share in the total launches in the overall real estate space thanks to post-pandemic demand. A survey by property consultant ANAROCK has found that the National Capital Region (NCR), the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MM), Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kolkata saw the launch of about 31,180 luxury projects in the July-September period, which is 27 per cent of the total 1,16,220 real estate projects during this period.

The survey comes at a time when India is all set to enter the festive season, a period that is typically characterised by consumers lining up their big purchases of the entire year and hence leads to demand for real estate assets.

According to ANAROCK, which defines housing projects priced above Rs 1.5 crore as luxury homes, this is the highest quarterly supply in the luxury segment entering the market in the past five years. In the corresponding period in 2018, the share of the segment in the overall project launches had stood at nine per cent, with 4,590 luxury projects.

Among the seven cities, Hyderabad registered the highest supply of luxury projects, at 14,340 units, followed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, with about 7,830 units, the survey found.

It also found out that while the share of affordable homes remained unchanged in the quarter ended September 2023, at 18 per cent, as the previous year, it saw a significant decline from 24 per cent in the corresponding period in 2021, 41 per cent in 2029, and 42 per cent in 2018. The property consultant categorises housing projects priced up to Rs 40 lakh as affordable homes.

“Developers have been bullish about the luxury homes segment because of its superlative performance after the pandemic, with overall sales rising steeply across the top seven cities. Post-pandemic, homebuyers have been seeking bigger homes and apart from high-end amenities and good location, luxury housing is primarily defined by generous floor space," said Prashant Thakur, Regional Director and Head-Research at ANAROCK Group.

Meanwhile, a city-wise analysis of the data highlighted that Chennai was the only city, among the top seven, to witness a drop in the supply of launches in the luxury segment during the three-month period compared with the levels seen five years ago.

In its Union Budget for the year ending March 2024, the Union government earmarked Rs 10 lakh crore as capex, in a big boost to infrastructure development in the country, translating to a 33.3 per cent increase compared with the previous year and equivalent to 3.3 per cent of the country’s GDP.

“Chhattisgarh is reaping the benefits of being a large steel-producing state,” the Prime Minister said.

The Nagarnar Steel Plant (NSP), built over 1,980 acres of land, is capable of producing high-quality steel. “The plant will put Bastar on the steel map of the world and provide a boost to the socioeconomic development of the region,” according to an official statement.

“The steel produced in Bastar will strengthen the armed forces along with boosting defence exports… It will give new momentum to the prioritisation of development of aspirational districts like Bastar by the central government,” the Prime Minister said.

He also said that the plant will provide employment opportunities to 50,000 youth from Bastar and nearby regions.

The Prime Minister said the government has taken numerous steps in the last nine years to make the nation self-reliant in steel production. He also pointed out that the state’s railway budget has been increased by about 20 times since 2014.
