One of the major areas of concern in the existing Indian education system is rote learning. In order to do away with this age-old process of education, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has suggested the competency-based assessment framework to strengthen the existing education system in the country as envisaged by the National Education Policy.

Improvement overall learning outcome
It is expected that the competency-based assessment will improve improve the overall learning outcomes for the secondary level, classes 6 to 10, covering mainly three subjects - English, Science and Maths.
British Council and AlphaPlus formulating model assessment framework
The British Council and AlphaPlus conducted an extensive research and analysis of the current learning and assessment model in Indian schools to formulate the model assessment framework.
Implementation of suggested assessment framework
The British Council at present is working with Cambridge, UK NARIC and Alphaplus for the development in specific areas which will help in the implementation of the suggested assessment framework.
Main objective
The framework is the basis for a larger project exercise currently underway where 40 assessment designers, 180 test item writers and 360 master trainer mentors are being trained in using this framework to create model question bank and collection of ideal lesson plans.
Participation in first phase
For the first phase, selected Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas, UT Chandigarh and private schools across the country will participate in the programme. Gradually, the programme will be rolled out to all the 25,000 CBSE schools all over the country by 2024.
