It is pertinent to mention that Sunil Raina - President and Business Head at Lava International Limited - had told Zee Business in August last year that the company was preparing to enter the wearable segment.

"We are currently preparing to launch smartwatches. In the next few months, you will see our smartwatches. We will provide some very interesting options to buyers. Just like our smartphones, these watches will be Made in India and it is going to be very interesting. We have 14 years of experience when it comes to making smartphones, therefore we have a fair idea about what consumers want," Raina said during an exclusive interaction with Zee Business' Raghwendra Shukla.

The Lava ProWatch will compete directly against smartwatch brands like Boat, Noise and Fire-Boltt.

This is a significant step by the Noida-based company as it has so far been mainly focusing on feature phones and smartphones. On the other hand, all major smartphone manufacturers have been in the wearable segment for quite some time.

Meanwhile, a report by International Data Corporation (IDC) said that smartwatch shipments in India soared by 73.7% last year to reach 53.4 million units.

As per IDC, Boat has dominated the fast-growing wearables market in India with a volume share of 26 per cent. Other key players are Noise and Fire-Boltt with a volume share of 12.1 per cent and 10.1 per cent respectively in 2023.
