The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by PM Narendra Modi, had given its approval for the doubling of the Surendranagar-Rajkot project in the year 2016. The completion period of the project at that time was four years.

However, its deadline was postponed several times. Lastly, the deadline for the completion of the project was set for December 2022, but this was later extended to March 2023. Since the project is 92 per cent complete, it is expected that the Railways will meet its March deadline.

As of now, the single line has to carry the passenger as well as freight traffic originating /terminating between Okha-Rajkot section, Porbandar-Kanlus section, Veraval-Rajkot section, and Maliya Maiyana / Navalakhi-Dahinsara-Wankaner section. In addition, freight traffic from two branch lines, Sikka-Kanalus junction and Windmill-Jamnagar sections, also converged on to the route. This makes it a very busy single-line section with very high potential to further growth due to the high industrial development envisaged in the Saurashtra region in the coming years. Once the railway tracks are doubled, the balance will be restored.
