ITC Maurya and Taj Palace generate 1 tonne and 750 kg waste everyday, respectively, the company said in a statement.

Under, partnership, the Bengaluru-based firm said it has set up GPS BioUrja, a compact and modern biogas plant at the premises of the two five star hotels on Sardar Patel Road in the national capital, which will generate 140 cum (cubic meter) biogas equivalent to 85 scm (standard cubic meter) PNG (piped natural gas) equivalent at ITC Maurya and 105 cum biogas equivalent to 52 kg LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) at Taj Palace.

The plant converts wet garbage into useful gas, reducing operating costs and minimising emission footprints, it said.

"Five star hotels are one among the significant waste generators in the city. Much of the waste generated from within the kitchens, all day long buffets and in room dining leftovers are mostly hauled off to landfills," the firm said in the statement.

Managing food waste from these five star hotels, restaurants, resorts and other commercial hospitality centres is a challenge the industry is fighting.

The company also said soon the waste-management plant will be set up at ITC Sheraton, District Centre at Saket, JW Mariott, Aerocity and Qutub Residency Hotel at Aurobindo Marg in New Delhi.
