Sri Lanka Crisis: Mahinda Rajapaksa steps down as PM amid growing protests; curfew imposed country-wide
Amid growing protests in Sri Lanka for his resignation, Mahinda Rajapaksa today resigned from his post of Prime Minister, IANS reported quoting other media reports said.
A curfew was imposed in the island nation after clashes between pro-and anti-government supporters occurred in Colombo and elsewhere, this report said quoting the Daily Mirror.
In order to pave the way for an all-party government to resolve the ongoing political crisis, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the president who is also under pressure to quit, had last week asked his brother and former president Mahinda Rajapaksa to step down from the PM position.
Despite this, Mahinda Rajapaksa insisted that only he would be able to lead any government, this report said.
