Earthquake in Cyprus Today: An earthquake of magnitude 5 on Richter scale jolted Cyprus today and it led to the halting of budget presentation in the nation's parliament. The parliament of Cyprus was in session and it was the time to vote on it when the earth began to tremble. Realising the jolt was an earthquake, the speaker of the parliament immediately asked the lawmakers to step out of the building. Many people in Cyprus took to social media to say how they felt the strong earthquake with furniture shifting and lamps swaying, especially in high-rise buildings.

The epicenter of this Cyprus earthquake was in the country's southeastern corner, reported Geological Survey of Cyprus. The earthquake frightened people and many fled their homes in full panic. However, no casualty, injury and damage to the public property has been reported due to the earthquake.

The Geological Survey of Cyprus informed that the earthquake struck at 4:27 PM (1427 GMT or 9:27 AM EST) and was felt across the island. The epicenter of the earthquake was in Cyprus' southeastern corner at a depth of 55 kilometers (34 miles). The earthquake  was also felt in neighboring Lebanon, Israel, Syria and Turkey.

Cyprus lies in an active seismic zone where it's estimated that 15 per cent of the world's earthquakes occur. The last major earthquake, measuring 6.8, happened in 1996 and was the island's strongest in the previous 120 years.
