Why is Nag Panchami celebrated?

The Shukla Paksha Panchami during Sawan month is observed as Nag Panchami, as per drikpanchang.com. Usually Nag Panchami day falls two days after Hariyali Teej.

In the Hindu calendar, some days are considered to be significant to worship serpent Gods. The Panchami Tithi especially during Shravan month is considered to be highly auspicious for this purpose according to drikpanchang.com. Nag Panchami is one of those significant days and it observed on Shukla Paksha Panchami during Shravana month.

The women across the country worship the serpent God or the Nag Devta and offer milk to the serpents on this day. The women also pray for the wellness of their brothers and their family members to the Nag Devta.

Nag Panchami date

According to drikpanchang.com, currently, Nag Panchami falls in month of July and August in the English calendar. This year, the festival is being celebrated today, August 13, 2021. The date for Nag Panchami in Gujarat is August 27, 2021.

It must be noted that in Gujarat Nag Panchami is observed 15 days later than that of most other states. According to the new moon to new moon lunar calendar followed in Gujarat, Nag Panchami falls during Krishna Paksha Panchami of Shravana month. The festival is more popularly known as Nag Pancham in Gujarat and usually observed three days before Krishna Janmashtami festivities.

Significance

It is believed that the pujas offered to the snakes reach the serpent Gods. So, people worship live snakes on the day as representative of serpents Gods who are revered and worshipped in Hinduism.
