Germany has taken steps to halt the process of certifying the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Tuesday, as the West started taking punitive measures against Moscow over the Ukraine crisis.

Construction on Nord Stream 2 was completed, but it needed approval from German regulators before it could go into operation.

Through the pipeline, Germany could have received the gas from Russia. Since Russia is the biggest supplier of gas in the European countries, the biggest question of the hour is the impact of this move on the cost of gas prices.
