Bhai Dooj 2023: Significance

According to ancient lore, once upon a time, Yamaraj, the deity of death, paid a visit to his sister Yami. On her brother's visit, Yami welcomed her by applying a tilak to his forehead. She also cooked special delicacies for him. Yamraj, moved by the compassion and love, requested a favour from his sister. She wished for his return every year, and she instructed any sister who performed the ceremonies and applied a tilak not to dread the god of death.

Yamraj, pleased, granted the wish; since then, the day has been commemorated, and is also known as 'Yama Dwitiya' in south India.

It is also said that after defeating demon Narakasura, Lord Krishna paid a visit to his sister Subhadra, who welcomed him with a tilak on his forehead. Since then, the day has been known as Bhai Dooj.

Bhai Dooj 2023: What to keep in mind while applying tilak

The day of Bhai Dooj was started by Yamraj and Yami, hence, both brother and sister should worship Yamraj and Yami before doing Tilak.

During the pooja, the sister should pray to remove all the troubles of the brother and grant him a long life.

While applying tilak, remember that the brother's face should be towards the north or north-west and the sister's face should be towards the north-east or east.

Sisters are suggested to keep a fast before applying tilak to the brother and can break her fast after applying tilak.

After applying tilak, sisters should feed sweets to their brothers. On the day of Bhai Dooj, the brother goes to his sister's house. If, for some reason, brother cannot visit the sister, then the sister can send the tilak and dry coconut to her brother.

Lastly, the brother should present his sister with a gift.
