Among the big guns who will be missing in action will be names like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Mohammed Shami and Ravichandran Ashwin, who are off to Australia for the T20 World Cup.

In their absence the Indian selectors have opted to field a few T20 World Cup reserve players and largely a fresh squad that includes Mukesh Kumar and Rajat Patidar, who earned their maiden call ups.

In the role of Dhawan's deputy will be middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer, who is part of the reserves named for the T20 World Cup.

Other standby players — right-arm pacer Deepak Chahar and leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi — have also been included in the India vs South Africa ODI team.

Shubman Gill will likely open the batting alongwith skipper Dhawan, while other top-order batters Rahul Tripathi and Rajat Patidar will also be itching to make their ODI debut in the IND vs SA ODI series.

India's middle order will feature the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan.

Left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed, Ravi Bishnoi and Kuldeep Yadav will form India's spin attack.

The pace department will be spearheaded by Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, Avesh Khan, Mohammed Siraj and newcomer Mukesh Kumar, who recently performed well against New Zealand 'A' side.

South Africa will be banking on the experienced Quinton de Kock, skipper Temba Bavuma, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Reeza Hendricks and Janneman Malan to do the job in the batting department.

Proteas have a potent bowling attack that includes the likes of Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Wayne Parnell, Kagiso Rabada, Dwaine Pretorious, spinner Tabraiz Shamsi among others.
