While Indians have won medals in five sports—shooting, rowing, cricket, sailing, and equestrian—it is the breathtaking performances of shooters with three gold, four silver, and five bronze that have helped the Indian contingent jump to seventh place in the Asian Games medal tally, led by China.

Earlier, the Indian shooting team, consisting of Rudrankksh Patil, Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, and Divyansh Singh Panwar, bagged the first gold for the country in the men's 10m air rifle event. Their feat was followed by women shooters in the 25m pistol (team) event, and on Wednesday at the 50m rifle (3-position individual) event.

The Indian women's cricket team too underlined its importance at the Asian Games, beating Sri Lanka in the women's T20 event title clash to grab the gold medal.

The Indian dressage team, featuring Hriday Chheda, Anush Agarwalla, Divyakriti Singh, and Sudipti Hajela, too highlighted its potential, winning a historic gold in the Asian quadrenniel event for the first time in 41 years.

The Indian contingent is aiming to improve its best-ever Asian Games haul of 70 medals that it achieved in Jakarta in 2018. As many as 570 members from India participated in the Jakarta Asian Games.

Reigning World and Olympic champion jewelin thrower Neeraj Chopra is aiming to defend his Asian Games title, while Commonwealth Games men’s 3000m steeplechase silver medallist Avinash Sable and woman hurdles star Jyothi Yarraji are also expected to win some medals for India in athletics.

Along with that, Indian boxers—world champion Nikhat Zareen and Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain—and Olympic medalist wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Antim Panghal are strong medal contenders for India. Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu and star badminton player PV Sindhu will also be seen in action in this edition of the Asian Games.

The Asian Games 2023 were originally scheduled to be held in 2022 in Hangzhou but were postponed to a year later due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
