England vs Australia: Why is it called The Ashes? Ashes history

According to popular belief, England lost to Australia at The Oval on August 29, 1882. This was the very first time England had lost on home soil.

In reaction to the result, a satirical obituary was published in the Sporting Times on the "death of English cricket". It wrote, "The body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia".

From there, the word "The Ashes" came into existence and led the way to the biggest and oldest cricket rivalry in history.

This series will also kick off the World Test Championship 2023–2025 cycle and will end with the final at Lord's in 2025.
