However, the team, led by legendary Shane Warne, upset Mumbai Indians in the semi-final and Chennai Super Kings in the final to clinch the inaugural trophy.

Australia’s Shane Watson played the key role in the team’s success with 472 runs and 17 wickets and helped Rajasthan win 13 matches out of 16 in the tournament.

The team would never show similar glimpses of brilliance in IPL, and barring in 2013, when they won 11 out of 18 matches and also reached the Champions League T20 final, the team stayed off the radar for most of years.

They had a lacklustre show in 2021 with just five wins in 14 matches, but they came off with flying colours in IPL 2022 and were on the verge of winning the title before Gujarat Titans dashed their hopes.

In IPL 2023, Rajasthan have retained Jos Butler, the highest run-getter in IPL 2022 with 863 runs in 17 matches, and skipper Sanju Samson (their second-highest run getter in the tournament in IPL 2022), and West Indian Shimron Hetmyer, and also purchased English stalwart Joe Root.

The bowling attack will be led by Yuzvendra Chahal, the highest wicket taker in IPL 2022 with 27 scalps in 17 matches, Trent Boult, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Adam Zampa.

Rajasthan have retained most of their IPL 2022 combination and are capable of ending their winless title drought.

Rajasthan Royals' Record in 2022

Butler and Chahal stole the limelight with their exceptional record.

Though the team heavily relied on them throughout the tournament, it was a strong mix of batting and bowling.

Kumar Sangakkara led their auction strategy and brought in the likes of Chahal, Prasidh Krishna, Boult, and Ashwin, their first-, second-, third- and fourth-highest wicket takers in IPL 2022, respectively, and Hetmyer.

The team retained its star batsman and skipper, Samson, Butler and Yashaswi Jaiswal.

While Butler ruled the roost, Samson too performed up to his reputation with 458 runs in 17 matches.

With nine wins in 14 matches, Rajasthan finished second in the points table behind eventual champions Gujarat Titans, and won 11 out of 17 matches, including play-offs.

The team had a fabulous run in IPL 2022, it was just that the team failed miserably in the final against Gujarat Titans.

Butler was their highest scorer in the title clash with 39 off 35 balls, but it was too little of an effort against Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat, who won the final by seven wickets.
