IPL 2023: Punjab Kings Team profile

Punjab Kings, formerly known as Kings XI Punjab, showed immense promise when they reached the semi-finals of the inaugural IPL in 2008, winning 10 of their 15 league matches, courtesy Orange cap holder Shaun Marsh.

But the team, despite featuring many class players like Virender Sehwag, Chris Gayle, Glenn Maxwell, David Miller, and Mitchell Johnson in different seasons, could never emerge as a force to be reckoned with in the majority of IPLs.

It was only in 2014, when the team looked invincible, as Maxwell and Miller took the opposition bowlers by storm.

Sehwag and Manan Vohra ably supported them in the middle order as the team won 12 of its 17 matches and lost five.

They seemed on the verge of winning the IPL title when Wriddhiman Saha’s 115 in the title clash against Kolkata Knight Riders helped KXIP impose 198 runs in 20 overs.

But Manish Pandey’s 94 off 50 balls innings spoilt KXIP’s party as KKR clinched the title by three wickets.

However, the performance helped the Punjab team earn a spot in the Champions League T20, where it finished as a semifinalist.

Punjab Kings have won 98 of their 2016 matches and lost 116 of them in the IPL. They have won three matches in a tiebreaker while losing one.

In IPL 2023, PBKS will be led by its new skipper and formidable batsman, Shikhar Dhawan.

However, the team suffered a blow even before the start of the tournament when English explosive batsman Jonny Bairstow was ruled out of IPL 2023 due to a leg injury.

Australian Matthew Short, who was the player of the tournament in the Big Bash League, has been brought in to take Bairstow’s place. PBKS have some very good overseas players with South African Kagiso Rabada, Sri Lankan Bhanuka Rajapaksa, England’s Liam Livingstone and Sam Curren, and Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza.

The team spent a whopping Rs 18.50 crore to purchase all-rounder Curren for this season. It will be interesting to see how PBKS use their overseas combination to get the maximum benefit.
