IPL 2023: Virat Kohli earned the dubious distinction of becoming the player with the second-most number of 'golden ducks' in IPL during Royal Challengers Bangalore's match against Rajasthan Royals at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday. His golden duck against Royals was his seventh golden duck in the tournament. Records showed that he holds the second position alongwith Sunil Narine and Harbhajan Singh. The distinction of the most number of golden ducks still stands with Rashid Khan — he's been out off the first delivery ten (10) times.

On Sunday, Kohli opened the batting alongwith Faf du Plessis and was out leg-before off the first ball of the innings bowled by Trent Boult. Despite such a torrid start, RCB's innings was held together by Glenn Maxwell (77 runs off 44 balls) and skipper Du Plessis (62 runs of 39 balls), as they put up a total of 189 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in stipulated 20 overs. In reply, the Royals could only muster 182 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in their quota of overs. Devdutt Padikkal top-scored with a 52 off 34 deliveries, while Harshal Patel claimed 3 important scalps.

What do 'golden', 'platinum' and 'royal' duck mean? Types of ducks in cricket

While a 'duck' means that a player got out for a zero (0 - a figure that looks similar to a duck's egg), it's called a 'golden duck' when the player is out off the first delivery they face.

Worse still, a player can get out without facing a legal delivery (run-out at the non-striker's end); such a nought is called a 'diamond duck'.

However, Kohli also got out off the first delivery of the match, which would qualify as a 'platinum duck' or a 'royal duck'.

In Test matches, if a player gets out on zero in both innings, then they're said to have gotten a 'pair'. And a 'king pair' is if a player gets 'golden ducks' — or they get out off the first delivery they face in both the innings.
