The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to return to power in Tripura for the second consecutive term with a landslide win, as per most exit polls on Monday.

BJP is likely to win 29-36 seats in Tripura, well ahead of the rival alliance of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) and the Indian National Congress, showed exit poll results by Zee News-Matrize. The CPM-Congress combine is expected to win 13-21 seats. 

The Tipra Motha Party (TMP) led by Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barma, is likely to win 11-16 seats, while others and independents may bag 0-3 seats, the Zee News-Matrize exit poll showed.

Axis My India exit poll results also showed BJP alliance likely winning 36 seats in Tripura, while the Left Front may bag just 6-11 seats. The Axis My India exit poll results indicate the Congress may not even open its account in the state.

Historically a Left bastion, Tripura handed a thumpting win to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the 2018 assembly polls. The BJP-led NDA had won 44 of the 60 seats in the assembly.

Tripura Meghalaya, Nagaland are the first among the nine states going to polls this year. Counting of votes in the three states will be done on March 2. The election to the 60-member assembly in Tripura was held on February 16. Meghalaya and Nagaland went to the polls on February 27, voting is expected to end by 5pm.
