Bihar By-election 2022: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced bypolls for two Assembly seats in Bihar. The bypoll is going to be interesting as this is the first time when people will vote ever since Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United) or JD(U) severed ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA government to join hands with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). The bypolls will be the first test for the Kumar-led Grand Alliance in the state. This is the second time when the government of Grand Alliance, or Mahagatbandhan, is in power.

Bihar Bypoll: List Of Candidates

The bypoll to Gopalganj Assembly was necessitated after the death of BJP MLA and former minister Subhash Singh - the party's prominent Rajput face. Singh, who held the cooperatives portfolio in the NDA government, died on August 16. He was representing the seat uninterruptedly since 2005. The BJP has now fielded his wife Kusum Devi from the Gopalganj Vidhan Sabha seat.

The Mokama seat was necessitated after Anant Singh was convicted and served a 10-year jail term in a case involving the recovery of an AK-47 from his house.

Sonam Devi is the BJP's candidate for the Mokama Vidhan Sabha seat. She is the wife of local leader Nalini Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh. She was named the BJP candidate for the Bihar Assembly by-poll just a day after Singh quit the JD(U).

On the other hand, the RJD candidate will be Neelam Devi. She is the wife of four-term MLA Anant Kumar Singh whose disqualification upon conviction in cases related to the recovery of arms and explosives from his residence necessitated the by-poll.

In Gopalganj, the party has fielded Mohan Prakash Gupta. He is an old party hand who belongs to the Vaishya community, traditionally seen as supporters of the BJP. The alliance partners of Mahagathbandhan have extended support to both candidates.
