Karnataka assembly election results 2023 LIVE Updates: The Indian National Congress (INC) crossed the halfway mark in the Karnataka assembly poll results 2023, as most exit polls had predicted, as the counting of votes in the 224-member Karnataka Vidhan Soudha (state legislative assembly) elections were underway after starting at 8 am on Saturday, May 13. The main challenger Congress has won in 136 seats while the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bagged 65 seats while the Janata Dal (Secular) won 19 seats, as per initial trends. This blog will keep you posted on the live updates from the counting of votes in the Karnataka assembly election results 2023:

Karnataka legislative assembly election results 2023 LIVE Updates: The Indian National Congress (INC) or the Congress party has attained a majority in the ongoing Karnataka assembly election results 2023, wresting power from the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) only southern state.

The Congress has won 136 seats and the incumbent BJP has come second with 65 seats. The Janata Dal (Secular) or JD(S) has been declared the winner in 19 seats while independents and others have clinched four seats. Outgoing CM Bommai has already conceded defeat and said that his party will do a detailed analysis of results.

The high-stakes assembly elections were held on May 10, with the key contest between the incumbent BJP and the challenger Indian National Congress (INC) party, with Janata Dal (Secular) vying to play the role of the king-maker. The 40-day-long campaign for the Karnataka polls saw political heavyweights from the three parties slugging it out at the hustings, with the BJP hoping to defend the only southern state under its control.

The ruling BJP's campaign was led by its Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, who addressed 21 rallies in the state, including a late blitz of road shows in the state capital, Bengaluru. The Congress campaign was led by Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, former chief minister Siddaramaiah, and state unit chief DK Shivakumar. JD(S) largely depended on the connections of its patriarch, former prime minister HD Deve Gowda.

Most exit polls have predicted that the Congress has an advantage and the party may wrest BJP's only southern state. However, given the range of seats and error margin factored into these polls, a close contest could be in the offing. The number of seats the JDS can win may also decide the permutation and combination of any post-poll alliance. Apart from results on ZeeBiz and our network websites, the official results will be available on the Election Commission of India website, eci.gov.in.

Pawar said that the people of Karnataka have taught a lesson to the divisive politics of BJP and handed over power to Congress. “This same trend is likely to be witnessed in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections,” predicted Pawar firmly.

He rued the trend of the BJP grabbing power in a state where it is not elected by breaking the MLAs of other parties, which the masses have disapproved of.

"They did it in Karnataka... they toppled the former government by usurping the MLAs of the previous government to grab power," said Pawar. The same happened even in Maharashtra and Goa earlier where the BJP took power in a similar fashion.

Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah and Karnataka Congress President D.K. Shivakumar are in the forefront for the coveted post and both are looking at the high command for its decision.

Sources explained that the high command is coming up with a 50:50 formula for Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah, as the stakes are huge for the party in the runup to the Lok Sabha elections.

Siddaramaiah is known as the mass leader of Ahinda (Alpsankhyak, Hindulida and Dalit) group comprising minorities, backwards and Dalits. He played a crucial role in policy making and manifesto promises. He is also known for his stinging criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and the RSS.

Shivakumar had built the party from the scratch in the state when BJP poached its top leaders, including sitting ministers in 2019. He organised the party and pooled in resources. He hails from the prominent Vokkaliga community and managed to get the majority of votes from them for the Congress party.

In Belagavi, Uttar Kannada, Haveri, Gadag, Vijayapura, Bagalokot, and Dharwad, the presence of the Lingayat community is high and the community, which has been traditional supporters of the BJP, seemed to have supported the Congress this time, the results showed.

Even though former Chief Minister, Jagadish Shettar, who had switched from the BJP to the Congress, lost this seat of Hubbali-Central Dharwad, the manner in which he was forced to leave the BJP was not taken well by the Lingayat community.

The All India Veerashaiva Community of the Lingayats also openly extended their support to the Congress and this was a major boost for the Congress in the run-up to the elections.

Former Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi, who had also left the BJP for the Congress, has won from his traditional seat of Athani in Belagavi district. Savadi is a powerful leader belonging to the Lingayat community and he was also forced out of the BJP by the party leadership including B.L. Santhosh and Basavaraj Bommai.

  • Karnataka election results 2023 LIVE Updates: Counting of votes to begin at 8 am tomorrow; BJP vs Congress as main contest but JD(S) aims to play kingmaker

Welcome readers to ZeeBiz.com's live coverage of the counting of votes and results for the 224-member Karnataka assembly elections 2023. The high-stakes assembly elections were held on May 10 with the key contest between the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the challenger Indian National Congress (INC) party with Janata Dal (Secular) vying to play the role of the king-maker. The 40-day long campaign for the Karnataka polls saw political heavyweights from the three parties slugging it out at the hustings with the BJP hoping to defend the only southern state under its control. The ruling BJP's campaign was led by its Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who addressed 21 rallies in the state, including a late blitz of road shows in the state capital Bengaluru. The Congress campaign was led by Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, former chief minister Siddaramaiah and state unit chief DK Shivakumar. JD(S) largely depended on the connect of its patriarch, former prime minister HD Deve Gowda. Most exit polls have predicted that the Congress has an advantage and the party may wrest BJP's only southern state. However, given the range of seats and error margin factored in these polls, a close contest could be in the offing. The number of seats the JDS can win may also decide the permutation and combination of any post-poll alliance. This blog will keep you posted on the live updates from the counting of votes in the Karnataka assembly election results 2023:
