The key contest will likely be between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress Party. The Janata Dal-Secular can be a serious contender in multiple seats and in case of a hung assembly emerge as a king-maker like in the past on several occasions. Both the Congress and JDS have already announced their first list of candidates for 124 and 93 seats, respectively. At present, the ruling BJP led by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has 119 MLAs, while the Congress has 75 and its ally JDS has 28 representatives. In addition to Karnataka, the poll body may also announce the dates for the by-polls to Wayanad and Jalandhar Lok Sabha constituencies. The by-poll to Wayanad is necessitated following the disqualification of senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as a Member of Parliament, while the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat has fallen vacant following the death of sitting Congress MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary in January.
