The day is marked annually with women observing a day-long-fast without water or food and praying for the longevity and happiness of their husbands. The festival falls on the fourth day of the Hindu month of Kartik. On this day, women worship God Shiva's wife Parvati.

For this auspicious festival, every year markets wear a festive look, especially in northern India. Women get henna designs on their hands, buy clothes and jewelry, traditional items and much more.
