Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev news: Spiritual leader Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev underwent an emergency brain surgery to remove bleeding in the skull on Sunday, March 17, a statement from the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in New Delhi said.

The official statement informed that Sadhguru was weaned off the ventilator post-surgery, adding that he has shown "steady progress and his brain, body and vital parameters have improved".

Hospital provides details of Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev's illness

The 66-year-old spiritual guru is the founder of the Isha Foundation and has launched campaigns like 'Save Soil' and 'Rally for Rivers' for environment conservation.

As per the health bulletin, he had been suffering from severe headaches for the last four weeks, but despite severe pain, he continued with his normal daily schedule and social activities and even conducted the Maha Shivaratri function on March 8.

The statement aded that after his headache worsened by March 15, when he consulted senior consultant neurologist Dr Vinit Suri, over the phone. Suri immediately suspected a subdural haematoma and advised an urgent MRI.

The spiritual leader underwent a brain MRI on the same day, and it revealed massive bleeding in the skull. "There was evidence of a chronic bleed of three to four weeks duration as well as fresh bleeding that had occurred within a duration of 24 to 48 hours," the statement said.

Sadhguru was advised immediate hospitalisation and appropriate medication schedule adjustment, but he had important meetings and events scheduled for March 15 and March 16, it said, adding he completed the meetings with the support of pain medication.

On March 17, he developed a decline in his level of consciousness, and weakness in the left leg, and was admitted to the medical facility under the care of Dr Suri. The CT scan revealed a marked increase in brain swelling and a decision was taken to operate, it added.

Sadhguru was managed by a team of doctors comprising Dr Vinit Suri, Dr Pranav Kumar, Dr Sudheer Tyagi and Dr S Chatterjee and underwent an emergency brain surgery on March 17 to remove the bleeding in the skull, the statement said.

 

 

Isha Foundation's press note on Sadhguru's health 

"Sadhguru has recently undergone a life-threatening medical situation. He is currently recovering well.

Sadhguru had been suffering from severe headache for the last four weeks. Despite the severity of the pain, he had continued with his schedule and activities, even conducting the MahaShivaratri event on 8th March 2024.

The headache got extremely severe by 14th March 2024 afternoon when he arrived in Delhi. On advice of Dr Vinit Suri, Senior Consultant Neurologist, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, Sadhguru underwent an urgent MRI at 4:30 pm the same day, which revealed a massive bleed in the brain. There was evidence of a 3-4 weeks old chronic bleed along with another fresh bleed which had occurred within 24-48 hrs of the time of examination.

Though he was advised of immediate hospitalization, Sadhguru mentioned to the doctors that “I have never missed a single meeting in my last 40 years”. Despite severe and agonizing symptoms, he completed his scheduled meetings on 14th March, and the India Today Conclave on 16th March under the effect of high dose of pain killers.

On 17th March 2024, Sadhguru’s neurological status rapidly worsened along with weakness of the left leg and marked worsening of headache with recurrent vomiting. He was finally admitted. A CT revealed a marked increase in brain swelling and life-threatening shift of the brain to one side.

Managed by a team of doctors (Dr Vinit Suri, Dr Pranav Kumar, Dr Sudheer Tyagi and Dr S Chatterjee), he underwent emergency brain surgery within a few hours of admission to relieve the bleeding in the skull. Sadhguru was weaned off the ventilator post-surgery.

Sadhguru has shown steady progress and his brain, body and vital parameters have improved to normal levels. His recovery has been better than expected and as per Dr. Suri “Sadhguru is healing himself, apart from the medical measures instituted by us.”
