National Voters’ Day 2023 History

National Voters Day was first observed in the country in 2011. The day aimed to inspire youth to participate in the election as voters. A proposal to that effect was accepted by the Union government at the time, which was headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Ambika Soni, the then Minister of Communication and Broadcasting, pointed out that young voters were exhibiting less desire in becoming registered voters.

In order to address this problem, the Election Commission of India (ECI) decided to launch a national campaign to identify all eligible voters who turn 18 on January 1 of every year.

Such voters would be registered each year on this day and given an Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC). Another motive behind choosing January 25 as voters day is that the Election Commission of India was also established on January 25, 1950.
