The idea to orchestrate this theft originated from the popular Sanish tv series—'Money Heist'. He was aided by four others in the crime.

Accused Altaf Shaikh, who was employed as the manager of cash custodian services in the Mumbai branch of the ICICI Bank, reportedly first learnt about the loopholes in the security system and then collected the material required for robbery.

After noticing AC repair work next to the safe room of the bank, he hatched the conspiracy to steal the money from the bank. He threw the money on a tarpaulin tied to the back of the bank building through a hole of the AC duct.
