Kerala Piravi 2022

In honour of the Malayalam term 'piravi', which means birth, locals refer Kerala Day as 'Kerala Piravi'. Thus, Kerala Piravi literally translates as 'the birth of Kerala'.

This day serves as a reminder of the day that Malayalam-speaking regions were united into a single independent state in the Republic of India. Kerala Piravi Day honours this historic union that gave rise to the creation of the Kerala we know today.

Kerala Day, Kerala Piravi History

In Kerala, there were four distinct regions before 1956: South Canara (Kasaragod region), Malabar, Cochin, and Travancore. On July 1st, 1949, the princely states of Travancore and Cochin united to establish the Travancore-Cochin State. Later, Travancore-Cochin included the Malabar area, which was originally a part of Madras state. Kerala as a state was established on November 1, 1956.

According to the States Reorganisation Act, the taluk of Kasargod in the South Canara district of Madras, the Malabar district of Madras, and Travancore-Cochin merged on November 1 to form the state of Kerala, leaving out the four southern taluks (which joined Tamil Nadu).

Following the first elections for the newly-formed Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1957, a Communist-dominated administration led by EMS Namboodiripad took charge of the state.

Kerala Piravi Celebrations

On this special day, people in the state dress traditionally, with women donning kasavu sarees and men sporting mundus.

Malayala Bhasha Vaarams, or language competitions, are organised by educational institutions to celebrate the state's cultural and linguistic identity.

On November 1 of each year, Kollam hosts the President's Trophy Boat Race to celebrate Kerala Day. The serene Ashtamudi Lake is transformed into a racetrack as the snake boats compete to earn the coveted trophy. The winner is presented with a trophy and Rs 10 lakh cash awards.
