On March 6, 1930, thousands of people took to the streets in major cities around the world to protest the Great Depression's mass unemployment. International Unemployment Day was named after this coordinated campaign of marches and demonstrations.

The initial plan was to hold the marches and protests on February 26 but because of delay in preparation it was observed on March 6, which also did not fail to draw attention to the problem of unemployment.

A proposal was made in the Executive Committee of the Communist International (ECCI) in Moscow, to establish March 6, 1930, as an "international day" of protest against unemployment.

In total, 30 American cities witnessed mass demonstrations as part of the March 6 campaign, including Boston, Milwaukee, Baltimore, Cleveland, Washington, DC, San Francisco, and Seattle, and full-fledged riots erupted in New York City and Detroit when thousands of people were attacked by police.
