Holika Dahan 2023: History

It is believed that the festival 'Holkia Dahan' has its root associated with ancient Hindu mythology, and the story marks the victory of good over evil.

According to legend, there was a demon king named Hiranyakaship whose son Prahlad was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. The king was not happy with his son's devotion and taught him several times not to worship Lord Vishnu. But the son Prahlad was the true devotee of Lord Vishnu and did not listen to his father. After that, the demon king tried to kill his son. He tried many times to kill Prahlad but failed. Eventually, his sister Holika tried to help him by trapping Prahlad in the fire. However, by the grace of Lord Vishnu, Prahlad was saved, while Holika was burnt to death.

And hence, to celebrate the victory of good over evil, people burn the Holika fire every year and celebrate Holi the next day.
