According to IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich List 2022, Ratan Tata is the most followed Indian industrialist on social media and his Twitter following rose by 18 lakhs this year.

Although well-known for his business empire and much-admired for his work ethic, Ratan Tata's name doesn't feature on the list of richest personalities in the country.

Ratan Tata has a net worth of Rs 3800 crore, which was largely sourced from Tata Sons. He was ranked at 421 on the list of richest Indians, as per IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich List 2022. As per the ranking, he stood at 433rd position, with Rs 3,500 crore in net wealth in 2021.

This is mainly because 66 per cent of the profit earned by the Tata companies, under the holding company Tata Sons, is donated for philanthropic activities through Tata Trusts.

Tata Sons is the principal investment holding company and promoter of Tata companies. Sixty-six percent of the equity share capital of Tata Sons is held by philanthropic trusts, which support education, health, livelihood generation, and art and culture.

The Tata Group has been into businesses ranging all the way from salt to IT. There are 29 publicly-listed Tata enterprises with a combined market capitalisation of $311 billion (Rs 23.6 trillion) as on March 31, 2022, according to its official website.

Ratan Tata and his family have been in philanthropic activities for more than half a century, which was started by his great grandfather Jamshetji Tata. In 2021-22, the combined revenue of Tata companies was $128 billion (Rs 9.6 trillion) with collective employees of over 935,000, as per official website of group.
