Dhanteras marks the beginning of the festivities of Diwali celebrations. The occasion is also called "Dhanatrayodashi" or "Dhanvantari Trayodashi. On this day, Lord Dhanvantari is worshipped by the devotees. 

Dhanvantari is the Hindu god of medicine and an avatar of Lord Vishnu. He is mentioned in the Puranas as the god of Ayurveda. Devotees pray to Dhanvantari to seek his blessings for sound health for themselves and/or others, especially on Dhanteras or Dhanvantari Trayodashi.

It is also believed that the God Dhanvantri came out with the jar of elixir during the churning of the ocean, when Gods and Demons stirred the Meru mountain. Needless to say, to be blessed by Lord Kuber and Goddess Lakshmi people invest in gold during this auspicious time of the year in order to gain blessings from the lord and prosperity in life in the coming year.
