According to the order, the ISPs are supposed to ban two specific webpages of WeTransfer in the country. However, the third order asked to ban the entire WeTransfer website. The ban comes at a time when several people are working from home and were using the platform to exchange media.

Why WeTransfer has been banned in India?

The reason behind the ban is not clear but there is much speculation about it and it has been  suggested that it has been banned as people were using the service to share pornographic content, pirated movies and more. However, the platform only allows users to upload content and not create it!

The website allows users to send files to up to 2GB straight to the recipient’s email without the need to create a separate account for it. The paid plan allows file-transfer of higher capacities.

The company has acknowledged the ban by responding on social media.

“We have received reports that WeTransfer is being (partially) blocked in India. Our team is currently investigating the issue, we hope to have more details soon. In the meantime, the best workaround is to use a VPN service to access our site,” it tweeted.

Launched in 2009, WeTransfer’s premium service allows users to share up to 20 GB of files or folders and also offers 1TB of storage space. The service directly competes against the likes of Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive and more.
