According to a report from HackRead, WhatsApp may not ask for scanning of QR codes on your laptop or desktop as a new beta test for the WhatsApp Web interface drops the need for an active mobile device.

It functions in a way that after you log in to the recent beta builds of WhatsApp Web, users see a message that informs them that they don’t need to keep their phone connected to use WhatsApp’s desktop app, the web app, or Portal, the report revealed. But only four devices will be able to use the feature at a time.

WhatsApp has not officially declared the release date of the app but users will soon be able to chat with their contacts on their desktop PCs without an internet connection.

Earlier, WABetaInfo, a website that tracks WhatsApp, took to micro-blogging site Twitter and wrote: "@WhatsApp will offer a WhatsApp Web Beta program for iOS and Android beta users, in order to use WhatsApp Web without having to keep your phone connected to the Internet!"

Meanwhile, in a big relief for WhatsApp users, Facebook-owned messenger has reportedly scrapped its May 15 deadline for users to accept its new policy.  The decision is said to have come after WhatsApp faced severe backlash and also saw its subscriber base gradually shifting to other similar platforms like Telegram.

In its new policy, WhatsApp had made it mandatory for its users to share data with its parent company Facebook. A WhatsApp spokesperson told PTI that no accounts will be deleted on May 15 for not accepting the policy update.

"No accounts will be deleted on May 15 because of this update and no one in India will lose functionality of WhatsApp either. We will follow up with reminders to people over the next several weeks," the spokesperson said in an emailed response to a query on Friday.
