While WhatsApp is frequently coming in with updates, some of the operating systems (OS) are unable to play catch up with the messaging app. That said, the Facebook-owned chat app announced on Monday that it would not support some of the OSes in due course.

In a fresh update on WhatsApp’s mobile devices support page, WhatsApp said that some of the devices running on old operating systems will not be able to handle all the features that WhatsApp plans to keep introducing on its app.

WhatsApp will curb services on some OSes altogether, while on others, users may keep using the app, but will not be able to create fresh accounts.

Below are the operating systems that are no longer supported:

  • Android versions older than 2.3.3
  • Windows Phone 8.0 and older
  • iPhone 3GS/iOS 6
  • Nokia Symbian S60
  • BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10

Here are the operating systems, where new accounts can't be created, but WhatsApp will keep working:

  • Nokia S40 until December 31, 2018
  • Android versions 2.3.7 and older until February 1, 2020
  • iOS 7 and older until February 1, 2020

"Because we'll no longer actively develop for these operating systems, some features might stop functioning at any time," said WhatsApp in the update.

WhatsApp recommended upgrading to a newer version, or to one of the following:

  • Android running OS 4.0+
  • iPhone running iOS 8+
  • Windows Phone 8.1+

"Once you have one of these devices, simply install WhatsApp and verify your phone number on the new device. Keep in mind that WhatsApp can only be activated with one phone number on one device at a time," it said.

So, if you are loyal to your good old operating systems and WhatsApp is crucial to you too, you will have to make a difficult choice to choose one.
